As a parent of two students who went through Homestake Peak and Battle Mountain, I know that the people working inside our schools can change the course of a child’s life.
My children were encouraged, challenged and cared for by educators who do far more than teach a lesson. They notice when a student is struggling. They celebrate progress. They push students to challenge themselves and meet them where they are. They coach a sport where their reach goes far beyond teaching athleticism. They create classrooms where children feel safe. They have taught my sons to be lifelong learners.
But even the most dedicated educators cannot continually do more with less. Larger classes and fewer teachers, counselors, librarians and enrichment programs affect every student. While art and music may seem like “extras,” in fact they strengthen neural connections, especially in the areas related to reading and math, and they help with emotional regulation. When we are forced to cut programs like these, we lose an important aspect of a well-rounded education.
Ballot Issue 5B would provide $10.1 million each year in locally controlled funding to help recruit and retain educators, strengthen academics, restore art, music and physical education, and protect important student support services.
I am grateful for what our schools have given my family. Now it is our turn to show up for them. I am voting “yes” on 5B. I am willing to pay the $11 a month two coffees!) per million of property value to give our students and educators the supports they need and deserve.
